Theatre in Dhaka: A New Chapter with TAAD
Theatre has long been a vibrant and integral part of Dhaka’s cultural landscape. From the golden era of stage performances to the contemporary experimental productions, theatre has continually evolved, reflecting society’s stories, struggles, and aspirations. However, amid this artistic progression, the individual theatre artists—the actors, directors, playwrights, designers, and backstage crew—have often lacked a unified voice.
This is where the Theatre Artists Association of Dhaka (TAAD) steps in, marking a new chapter in Dhaka’s theatre scene.
Why TAAD?
In recent years, theatre artists have faced numerous challenges—financial instability, lack of institutional support, insufficient career growth opportunities, and absence of a structured welfare system. While theatre troupes have played a significant role in producing remarkable performances, individual artists often struggled without proper representation.
TAAD was created to address these issues, providing a collective platform for theatre artists to:
- Ensure artistic and professional rights
- Advocate for fair opportunities and recognition
- Develop a strong support network
- Enhance skill-building and artistic collaborations
A New Community for Theatre Artists
TAAD welcomes any theatre artist actively engaged in Dhaka’s theatre industry for at least the past five years. Unlike other organizations that revolve around specific theatre troupes, TAAD focuses on individual memberships, ensuring equal representation for everyone.
President Azad Abul Kalam has emphasized that TAAD is not in competition with any existing theatre organizations. Instead, it aims to fill the gaps by focusing on artist welfare, career development, and policy advocacy.
What’s Next?
With its first executive committee in place, TAAD is set to embark on several key initiatives, including:
Workshops & Training Sessions – Enhancing skills in acting, direction, playwriting, and backstage work.
Artist Welfare Programs – Providing financial aid, healthcare support, and career guidance.
Industry Networking Events – Creating opportunities for collaboration and exposure.
Theatre Policy Advocacy – Working with cultural institutions to improve conditions for theatre professionals.
Join the Movement
Theatre is not just about performances—it’s about the people who bring stories to life. TAAD invites all theatre artists in Dhaka to be a part of this growing movement. Whether you’re an actor, director, playwright, set designer, or part of the backstage crew, your voice matters.
Stay tuned for upcoming events, initiatives, and membership details. Let’s work together to build a stronger, more supportive theatre community in Dhaka!
